2020 Mahindra Scorpio spotted testing, bigger & better?

Written by Parichay Malvankar

Codenamed as the Z101, the all-new 2020 next-generation Mahindra Scorpio has already started test runs on Indian soil. First launched in 2002, the Mahindra Scorpio has been a mass market favourite in the SUV space, and also, the Scorpio has proven to be quite a good off-road vehicle in various applications / competitions. The all-new Scorpio is expected to make a debut at the 2020 Auto Expo and will give a tough fight to the newer crop of cars in the segment which includes the Tata Harrier, MG Hector, and the likes; but, the Scorpio will be a 4×4 / AWD vehicle which gives it an edge.

This Z101 SUV, the new-generation Scorpio is developed grounds up. It is new in terms of the chassis, the engine and also the complete body that will define the new generation. From the spyshots, one can notice a new grille design, but still typical of the toothed pattern which Mahindra follows. New bumpers at the front and back which will be compliant for pedestrian safety guidelines as well. The overall profile of the new Scorpio looks less boxy, and longer than before. Of course, the new generation Scorpio will also be a 7-seater SUV, and this time, we expect the 3rd row to have front facing seats ditching the current side facing jump seats. The spyshot has the car seen completely camouflaged, but one can clearly see bold crease lines on the side profile. Going by the current design trend of Mahindra cars, things are looking pretty positive for the upcoming Scorpio.

The new Scorpio is expected to be lighter than the current model with better components being used in its construction. Yet, it is also expected to be safer with new and latest tech being offered. We expect ABS, up to 7 airbags, ESP, EBD, all-four disc brakes to be on offer on the new Scorpio.

The 2020 Z101 Scorpio will most definitely come with 4×4 technology with a low-ratio for proper off-roading. Mahindra strongly markets their products for their go-anywhere capabilities and the Scorpio will surely be better than the current model on sale which is quite old in terms of the package that it brings to the table.

Interiors are also expected to be heavily reworked, to be better than the old utilitarian look that it currently comes with. Expect latest bells and whistles like touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, colour MID, voice commands, soft touch panels, steering modes, adjustment for all seats, 2nd & 3rd row AC, etc.

The 2020 Scorpio is expected to get a BS-VI compliant diesel engine. This could be a 2.0L block, a 4-cylinder motor producing close to 170 HP of power and 400 Nm of torque with a manual as well as automatic gearbox option. This engine will also get an eVGT turbocharger.

We expect the 2020 Scorpio, the Z101 to be a little more pricey compared to the current model. But given that it will be better in every aspect, it might be justified well.
