Suzuki’s Gujarat plant has now completed cumulative automobile production of 2 million units. The company achieved this landmark on August 20, 2022. Suzuki’s Gujarat plant was set up in March 2014. It was the company’s first 100 per cent Suzuki-investment automobile production company in India.
A Valuable Asset For Maruti Suzuki
The production from this facility started in February 2017. And in just 5 years and 6 months, SMG achieved accumulated production of two million units. With this, it was the fastest by any Suzuki production plant. The two-millionth vehicle produced was a Baleno for the South African market. Noteworthy to mention, Suzuki is using the 1.5-litre petrol motor for the South African Baleno. Located close to the Mundra Port, this Gujarat plant also plays an important role in the export business. Due to the strategic geographical location, SMG has used it as an export hub for markets, including Europe, Africa and Japan.
Cars Being Produced Thick And Fast
The millionth car from SMG was also a Baleno. SMG clinched this feat back on October 21, 2020. This had happened within just three years and nine months since starting production in February 2017. So to calculate, the last million cars have come up in just 21 months, which is quite remarkable but not surprising. Suzuki also mentioned that it will soon start production of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in 2025 and vehicle batteries for BEVs in 2026.
Models Manufactured In The Plant
The SMG plant produces multiple models for Maruti Suzuki. Plant A rolls out the Baleno and Toyota Glanza. Meanwhile, Plant B produces the Swift and the Dzire. At the same time, Plant C is responsible for the production of the Dzire and the Baleno. Maruti Suzuki India’s current pending orders stand at 3,87,000 units. And as per reports, the premium Baleno hatchback currently has an order backlog of an estimated 38,000 units.
