100 kmph capable Polarity e-Bike spotted testing

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Polarity Smart Bikes, a Pune based electric mobility solutions manufacturer established in 2017 with a target to fight global warming and to reduce the carbon footprint by developing sustainable transport solutions will be launching a new electric bike soon in India.

The e-bike is actually a bicycle with a hub driven electric motor and lithium-ion batteries within its frame. The e-bike has pedals and can be ridden without electrical power. The motor on the e-bike is powerful enough to propel the e-bike and the rider to speeds of around 100 kmph and the lithium-ion battery pack can deliver a real-world range of 80 km on a single charge.

Though details on the e-bike are scarce at the moment, a test mule of the e-bike was spotted testing under camouflage and looking at the spied images, the bike appears to have a very bicycle like design language, slim frame with the batteries integrated into the frame triangle, a straight handlebar with switchgear on the left-hand side, a digital LCD/TFT display which is expected to show – battery power, range, trip distance, speed, etc., an upside-down front fork in golden finish, fat tyres and a disc brake on the front and rear wheel. The rear comes with a motorcycle-like swingarm linked with a monoshock suspension, a small luggage carrier and a hub integrated motor on the back. The e-bike boasts features like LED headlight, LED taillight and turn indicators.

According to a media report, the e-bike conforms to the FAME II regulations which means the e-bike will have to be registered with the local authorities as an electric vehicle, but can be used as a bicycle without electrical assistance. This also means that the electric motor employed on the e-bike is likely to be rated at more than 250W.

When launched the Polarity e-bike will open-up a new segment of powerful personal mobility solution. Other existing e-bikes only provide pedal assist to reduce efforts with a considerably less range such as the GoZero, Hero Ezephyr, Tronx One, etc.

The Polarity e-bike is being road tested and is expected to launch by the end of June 2019 at a price of around the INR 60,000.
