Written by Nizam Shaikh

The much-awaited 100% electric compact SUV, the Volkswagen ID.4 has been unveiled in a digital world premiere marking its entry into the world’s largest market segment, the compact SUV class. About a month ago, Volkswagen confirmed that it has commenced the series production of ID.4 in Zwickau, strengthening the brand’s all-electric offensive.

The Volkswagen ID.4 is powered by an electric drive motor, positioned at the rear axle, that produces 204 PS (150 kW) of power mated to a 77 kWh (net) battery pack that enables a range of up to 520 km on the WLTP cycle.  The powertrain has the capacity to propel the ID.4 from 0-100 kmph in 8.5 seconds and deliver a top speed of 160 kmph. The Volkswagen ID.4 can be recharged at home, out and about or on a long journey and supports 125 kW DC Fast Charging that can add 320 km of range in 30 minutes.

The Volkswagen ID.4 measures around 4580mm in length and comes with a healthy ground clearance of 210mm, allowing the ID.4 to traverse over rough roads, speedbreakers as well as gentle off-road terrains. Thanks to the MEB architecture, the ID.4 also boasts a spacious cabin with a luggage carrying capacity from 543 to 1,575 litres.

On the inside, the Volkswagen ID.4 features a wide and flat dashboard fascia with multiple layers and an uncluttered centre console with only a few physical buttons and switches. The centre fascia consists of a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system with “Hello ID” voice control. The ID.4 comes with a fully digital instruments screen, a control mounted steering wheel and an optionally available augmented reality head-up display. The ID.4 also features the new ID.Light – a narrow light strip under the windscreen that intuitively supports drivers.

In terms of design, the ID.4 features a nature-inspired flowing design with athletic proportions and ultra-modern look. The ID.4 comes with an aerodynamics drag coefficient of 0.28 that helps save power and improve range. Even in the standard version the ID.4 comes with LED headlamps and taillamps, along with the interactive IQ.Light LED matrix headlights on the top-of-the-line variant. The headlight comes with swivelling lens modules and intelligently controls the main beam. The ID.4 also comes with new 3D LED tail light clusters.

The Volkswagen ID.4 is an all-electric compact SUV based on the MEB – Modularer E-Antriebs-Baukasten (modular electric drive matrix) architecture and will be built and sold in Europe, China, and later in the USA.
