Skoda Scala is a new premium hatchback

Written by Parichay Malvankar

Skoda has just revealed their new premium hatchback, the Scala. Don’t get confused with the dull Renault Scala here in India. The Skoda Scala will be replacing the Rapid in the international market. The Rapid sedan we get here in India is a different car though. Based on the Volkswagen MQB A0 chassis, Scala means Ladder in Latin.

Taking design cues from the Vision RS concept, the Skoda Scala is really a good looking car. The rear design for some reason reminds us of the Volvo V40.

This is a 5-seater premium hatchback measuring 4362mm in length, 2649mm in wheelbase and has a boot space of 467L. The brand also adds the popular umbrella compartment in the driver door & ice scraper in the fuel filler cap. The Scala will get all-new interiors with different materials and will also include a new touchscreen infotainment along with a 10.25″ virtual cockpit.

The Scala is now announced to be made available with a 1.0L motor in either 99 HP or 115 HP tune. A 150 HP 1.5L motor burning gasoline again and a 1.6L 115 HP diesel engine. Gearbox options with include 5-speed MT, 6-speed MT and 7-speed DSG. Plug-in hybrids are also a possibility in the future. For the enthusiast, there is a sport chassis option which ground clearance lowered by 15mm.

The MQB A0 platform is already being readied for India for a number of Skoda and Volkswagen cars. But if the Scala will make a comeback in India, is yet to be revealed. The last and only hatchback that Skoda offered in India was the Fabia, which was a bit ahead of its times, but was a great car overall.
