Kia to launch SP2i (SP Concept SUV) in India sooner than planned

Written by Parichay Malvankar

Kia Motors showcased the SP Concept SUV for the Indian market nearly a year back now. However, things are more than just in place for Kia here in India. The SP Concept SUV has already started road testing, and even the Kia plant in India is soon expected to commence trial production for this SUV.

The SP Concept, also known by the codename SP2i will be a sibling to the Hyundai Creta. However, both cars will be way different in the way they are packaged inside and outside. The SP2i, SP Concept SUV is now in road testing and evaluation phase where Kia will set the car up to suit the Indian road conditions, and also to meet the customer demand here in India.

Since the plant will be ready soon, and if the car gets set for the streets sooner, Kia might be planning to launch the SP2i sooner than what was planned. It was earlier in the pipeline to hit showrooms by the second half of 2019. However, thanks to some swift progress on the product and manufacturing side, this earlier launch timeline can be achieved.

The SP2i is a mid-size SUV for the Indian market. When launched, it will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta and the upcoming Tata Harrier. Both petrol and diesel engine options will be on offer for the Kia SP2i. Kia is also working on having their dealer network set for the launch.

Kia Motors will manufacture cars in India at their facility at Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.
