50% localisation for BMW cars in India

BMW had revealed earlier that they will increase localised content on their Indian car line-up. Now, the localisation content on BMW cars here in India has been bumped up to an impressive 50%.

BMW who sourced only 20% of localised content before has now increased that figure to over 50% here in India. BMW locally assembles 8 models in India which include the 1-series, 3-series, 5-series, X1, X3, X5 & the flagship 7-series.

Previously, the company had only 2 local suppliers and has now increased that number to 8 local suppliers.

BMW has invested up to Rs. 490 crore  and the Chennai plant is now capable of manufacturing 14,000 units / annum.

As of now, BMW 95% cars sold in India are locally assembled.

In 2015-16, BMW plans to launch up to 15 new models to gain the lost market share. The German brand will also target Tier 2 cities to attract a larger audience.
